Tinnitus can have very diverse individual effects. In addition to the typical primary symptoms of tinnitus, such as ringing, whistling, or buzzing in the ears, a range of accompanying symptoms can occur. These include psychiatric conditions such as burnout and depression, as well as stress, anxiety, sleep disturbances, irritability, sound sensitivity, dizziness, and concentration problems.
Tinnitus is distinguished into two types: objective and subjective tinnitus.
Objective tinnitus can, for example, be measured with a stethoscope. It is often caused by a vascular or muscular sound source.
Subjective tinnitus, on the other hand, is more common than objective tinnitus. In this case, the affected individuals perceive ear noises due to faulty information processing in the brain.
Tinnitus can also be classified by its duration. In the first three months, it is referred to as acute tinnitus. If it persists up to six months, it is called subacute tinnitus. A tinnitus lasting longer than six months is considered chronic.
Tinnitus can, in addition to physical symptoms, also be a warning signal for overload and chronic stress. Tinnitus is often directly associated with burnout syndrome. However, other mental health conditions such as depression, anxiety disorders, and obsessive-compulsive disorders can also increase the risk of developing tinnitus.
Tinnitus can occur at any age. Most affected individuals are between 40 and 50 years old. In recent years, increasingly younger people have also been affected by tinnitus. Currently, approximately 3 million adults suffer from tinnitus lasting longer than three months, with about 270,000 new cases each year.
